First-time business owners strive to create more spiritual acceptance among Bay City shoppers.

Lorie Starr and Melissa Alex opened Besom Apothecary, 102 N. Walnut St., on the West Side of Bay City on Sept. 18.

If you’re shopping for something special, the owners can create a custom herbal tea for you.“Besom means witches broom” says Starr. “Originally, we were going to come in a little bit toned down, a little quieter. People in this field know what besom means, but other people just assume it is a last name”

But after hesitating for a moment, they changed their minds.  “We decided to come in full force. It’s not something you hear often, it has aged out of our language” says Starr.

Friends of 14 years, Starr and Alex constantly pursue methods to raise awareness of their work, share their enthusiasm, and offer a safe space to everyone.

Starr has a wealth of knowledge from the spiritual world. She is an ordained minister, a certified herbalist, and a hypnotherapist. Starr has more than 30 years of expertise in tarot reading. She does home energy cleansing. Starr practices many kinds of healing including hands-on, aura, and crystal healing. Many of these services are provided at this location.

In addition to herbs, the shop also carries crystals. Co-owner Lorie Starr specializes in crystal healing.“We wanted to do something about 10 years ago, we were tired of not being able to find quality items at an affordable price,” says Alex. “We wanted something unique and different. It took time for us to open, but finally being able to open is a dream come true.”

Starr and Alex are both lifelong residents of Bay City. When searching for locations for their shop they considered the city’s history, including location, building, and environment.

“From our basement, you can see the old tunnels that ran to the river where they used to bring in alcohol during the prohibition days. All of the buildings in the area used to be connected at one point,” says Alex.

“Bay City’s history is amazing,” adds Starr.

A first glance into the store reveals a large variety of inventory. Custom teas, handmade items from other small Michigan businesses, and clothing accessories of all sorts fills the space.

“We chose items based of quality and affordability, and if they are something we would want,” says Starr.

Take a walk down to the basement of the building to find a beautiful room they practice their many services. Draped in gold curtains and completely private from the store, here’s where you may find Starr participating in metaphysical practices.

The shop carries handmade items, such as these decorative brooms.Starr and Alex would like to potentially expand and put all their energy and passion into the shop.

Until then, store hours are limited. “For now, we are really content with evening hours and being here on the weekends,” says Alex.

Any time spent at the store is a labor of love for the pair. “We initially went into this as a hobby, but we are really falling in love with it,” Starr says. “We are falling in love with the people we meet.”

“We are excited to help this area grow,” adds Alex.

Everyone is welcome to check out the shop and enjoy a glass of its custom tea, “Spellbinder.” Hours are 5 to 9 p.m. Wednesday through Friday; noon to 9 p.m. on Saturday; and noon to 5 p.m. on Sundays.

For Jordan Lavergne, the worlds of music, massage therapy and spiritual healing are interwined – 225 Baton Rouge

npressfetimg-1449.png

Not long after moving to Baton Rouge to attend LSU on an academic scholarship, a young Jordan Lavergne saw his first real concert: Kendrick Lamar at The Varsity. He’d never been particularly inclined toward music, but something shifted at that show.

Upon meeting Lamar after his performance, Lavergne was struck by how meek and personable the rap luminary was. He says the experience showed him that no innate exceptionality was required to forge a career in music; all it took, he realized, was passion. And it was that show that sparked his own.

Lavergne began honing his craft by freestyling “incessantly” and drinking in inspiration from old Tupac interviews. Soon, he was making his way to open mics, performing at venues like the Culture Reggae Club and the Tigerland Hookah Lounge, and quickly graduating to regular paid shows. He soon adopted his now-signature pseudonym, Jazz Bandito.

Now 28, Lavergne has pivoted toward management and curation, overseeing and advising several Baton Rouge artists and organizing various events around town, such as a Juneteenth concert this summer at The Varsity. But just as his passion was not limited to rapping, nor is it limited to the music industry. Of equal importance, Lavergne says, is his work in massage therapy and spiritual healing, which even landed him a feature in The New York Times.

“Jazz is definitely a Jack of all trades,” says Baton Rouge music producer, engineer and audio technician Joseph Swiger, Lavergne’s close business partner and friend. “He’s a go-getter. He’s versatile. He’s not really stuck in his own box.”

As Lavergne’s musician friends grew to take their crafts more seriously, he noticed a common need for structure and guidance. Having previously worked in management positions in restaurants, he felt that was a role he could fill.

In the meantime, his spiritual journey became just as important as his musical one.

Raised in a nondenominational Christian family, Lavergne began to feel spiritually adrift during college and started studying world religions, including texts like the Islamic Quran and Hindu Upanishads.

It led him to train in the spiritual healing technique known as reiki. Now a master of the practice, Lavergne says he helps his clients to alleviate physical, mental and spiritual ailments by tracing central energy points, like the heart, throat and third eye, with crystals.

“Jordan is definitely very receptive. He asked very aware, conscious questions during training,” says Lisa Hernandez, a longtime reiki practitioner who mentored Lavergne. “I know that he’s also applied much of what he’s learned in his personal practice.”

Lavergne is a licensed massage therapist, too, working at The Emporium on Government Street and keeping his own office at Move Better Bodyworks.

There’s a duality between these seemingly divergent career paths, Lavergne says. His mission, in everything, is to guide others.

“I’m realizing no matter what I do—whether I’m a rapper, a manager, a healer—my goal is to help people. Healing is my calling.”

Norway princess quitting royal duties to focus on spiritual healing – UPI News

Norway’s Princess Martha Louise announces she will step down from her royal duties, while retaining her title, to focus on alternative medicine and her fiance Durek Verrett, who is a self-proclaimed shaman. Photo courtesy of Royal House of Norway

Nov. 8 (UPI) — Norway’s Princess Martha Louise is stepping down from her royal duties to focus on her alternative medicine business and her American fiancé, who calls himself a spiritual healer and believes “cancer is a choice.”

The Norwegian princess, 51, announced Tuesday that she would officially step down from all royal engagements once she and her fiancé, Durek Verrett, are married. Martha Louise said she made her decision after consulting with her father, King Harald V, according to a video she posted in Norwegian to her Instagram account.

“I have decided that at this time, I will not continue my official duties as protective for various organizations,” Martha Louise said. “There will be another in the family to take over my role. I wish the organizations good luck for the important work they are doing,” she said.

While the princess is “relinquishing her patronage role,” and would no longer participate in royal duties, King Harald V said he decided she should keep her title.

“She has performed her duties with warmth, care and deep commitment,” the palace said in a statement. King Harald also described Verrett as “a great guy and very funny to be with.”

“He has a lot of humor, and we laugh a lot, even in this difficult time. I think both we and he have gained a greater understanding of what this is about, and we’ve agreed to disagree,” King Harald told Norwegian reporters.

Martha Louise discussed the controversy over her relationship with Verrett in Norway when they started dating three years ago. While Verrett is a self-proclaimed shaman, he will also become the first Black man to marry into a European royal family.

“In Norway, it’s very, very, extremely controversial. I should be with a CEO or a lord or someone of a high rank of some sort,” she told Vanity Fair in 2020. “To be with a shaman, that’s very, extremely, terribly out of the box. It’s crazy.”

Verrett describes himself as a “6th Generation Shaman,” who has claimed to be risen from the dead. Verrett, who said he has influenced actress Gwyneth Paltrow, also claims to have predicted the 9/11 attacks two years earlier in 1999.

Princess Martha Louise became engaged to Verrett in June and announced their relationship in a 2019 Instagram post.

“To those of you who feel the need to criticize: Hold your horses. It is not up to you to choose for me or to judge me,” she said. “Shaman Durek is merely a man I love spending my time with and who fulfills me.”

Follow the Reiki: Lauren Scott’s life-changing journey focuses on spiritual healing – Hour Detroit Magazine – Hour Detroit Magazine

npressfetimg-491.png

“Follow the Reiki.”

Lauren Scott did just that, and it helped her through a tragedy in her life and led her to creating her own business where others can find comfort and healing because “we all need healing in our lives.” she says.

Scott, owner and founder of Reiki Euphoria LLC in Rochester, says she has always been a spiritual person and believes Reiki has always been there for her. “I just needed to find it.” she says.

Her “journey” started with the sudden passing of her father. “Going through the heartache and tragedy of unexpectedly losing my dad put me on a path where I had to heal myself so I could keep pushing forward with my life,” Scott says. “On the one-year anniversary of my dad’s passing, I signed up for a Reiki 1 and 2 class, and it changed my life.”

Scott, 39, went on to take Master class, Animal Reiki, and then the Animal Reiki Master class. “It gave me the calling to help others through Reiki,” she says. “It wasn’t only healing for me but life-changing. I feel like I was led to go this way and my dad is watching me and is my cheerleader.”

Reiki is a spiritual healing art with roots in Japan. The word Reiki comes from the Japanese word (Rei), which means “universal life” and (Ki), which means “energy.” It isn’t affiliated with any particular religion or religious practice it isn’t massage and it isn’t based on belief or suggestion.

“It’s the life energy that flows through all living things,” Scott says. Scott, a certified Usui/Holy Fire III Reiki Master/Practitioner and Karuna Reiki Master, is also an ICRT Animal Reiki Master. She’s a member of the International Center for Reiki Training, The International Association of Reiki Professionals, and the Shelter Animal Reiki Association.

Reiki Euphoria, which opened in August, offers many different services including regular Reiki sessions, animal Reiki sessions, and classes for those interested in teaching Reiki.

A Reiki session, which lasts about an hour, can help ease tension and stress and helps support the body to facilitate an environment for healing on all levels – physical, mental, and emotional. Sessions are pleasant and relaxing, and are utilized for one’s personal wellness.

Animal Reiki is a special style of Reiki with specialized techniques whereby practitioners offer the benefits of Reiki to all species and their caregivers. Reiki can be done face-to-face or virtually.

Reiki Euphoria also offers classes in Reiki 1 and Reiki 2 that run for two days. “Reiki 1 is a lot of the history and people get to practice a little on themselves and each other,” Scott says. “In Reiki 2, they get placed with some of the Reiki symbols so they’re able to use them. It’s a lot of fun and a lot of healing.”

Students receive a certification to become a practitioner after completing the classes. Scott says the reaction to her business has been very positive.

“A lot of people are curious about what we do and what we offer,” she says. “Not a lot of places offer Reiki classes like we do so there’s been great interest in that. When some people come into Reiki classes they don’t know what they’re walking into. To see them realize they can do it on their own is really a fun and rewarding process.”

In fact, the entire “journey” has been rewarding.

“Reiki heals what it needs to heal in people,” Scott says. “Everyone experiences things differently. I love being able to watch people’s lives transform in the same way Reiki(changed my life).”

In fact, the entire “journey” has been rewarding.

“Reiki heals what it needs to heal in people,” Scott says. “Everyone experiences things differently. I love being able to watch people’s lives transform in the same way Reiki(changed my life).”

MILWAUKEE — Milwaukee is rich with hidden gems, and I love digging them up! The Zen Dragonfly is one such gem. It’s a real experience of healing where you leave it feeling more relaxed than when you came.

“It is truly a holistic spiritual business,” says owner Angela Smith.

She reaches back to many age-old traditions with her healing modalities, such as crystal reiki, yoga, and sound healing with singing bowls and tuning forks to name a few.

“We are vibrational beings, so sound affects us, and when we are out of tune, these modalities bring us back into focus.” Smith says.

I was intrigued enough to get on her table for a tune-up. Smith struck a tuning fork, placed it on my forehead, and the vibration radiated through my entire body…I felt altered…in the best way. I was hooked!

Smith says that it’s important to follow all directives from your doctor, but I say this is worth a try. After all, back in the day, grandma always knew a way to help was ways passed down through generations.
